18 Jake: Welcome to Jet Kingdom podcast, the longest-running New York Jets podcast ever and forever. Period. End of sentence. I'm Jake joining me 335 times in a row. That's how many games we played since we've actually won, it feels like. It's Justin. Justin, how are you doing on this fine whatever day this is? Oh, it's 2021. It's the best year ever. Justin: It's the Thursday. It's the Thursday before super wild card weekend. Jake: Super wildcard weekend. Excited for super wildcard weekend. We get two days of three games. Saturday and Sunday. One, four, and eight. Wow. That's good. So I'm really excited about that. That's an awesome weekend of football. I mean, that's as good as it gets. But wait, so what happens... three three, but doesn't that make one more game next week? Is that what happens? No, no, no, yeah. It's so there's an extra team in the wild cards. So now there's seven teams in the playoffs, but only the top seed gets the bye. That second team that gets the bye has to play to advance. Basically, that's how it's that's how they got the extra team in there was saying, nope, just. just wanting you to get a bye. So my crew was not paying attention. Yeah. So there'll be three winners on Saturday and there'll be three winners on Sunday. And those six teams will join the two that are on by and then there'll be, you know, two games on Saturday, Sunday again, the next week, which is usually that's the best week of football. Right. That second playoff week, the divisional. like the week after the wild card usually got to me that's the championship championship weekend I just like the weekend before it because it has four games and not two and it's about getting to that championship game and then you just have like championship sunday which is also awesome but you don't have anything on saturday but it's usually the best football ever happens on championship weekend then the super bowl usually is like eh but the championship weekend because you kind of have the best of both sides and the conferences sometimes aren't as equal. Yeah, this year it's very, it's very, very AFC heavy. The AFC is way better than the NFC. But I guess before we talk about looking forward to the playoffs, which we're both looking forward. You actually tried to stick to the agenda. Bringing us back to the agenda. The Jets did finish their season. So we should talk about that because it finished. That was been cooking, not me. Yeah, it finished in a meaningless game
00 Jake: because we inexplicably won two games in a row. Or was it two out of three? Whatever it was, I think it was two in a row. And it was. And then we were facing like a depleted Patriots team. Um, that I want to, I would say, I mean, there's no way to know this for sure. But I imagine if the jets were Owen 15 and there was a chance that if the jets won, they would not get that number one pick. I have to imagine that the Patriots don't beat us, but since they were made nowhere, they'd pull an Eagles. I think so. And, and since there, because there was nowhere for us to go. Bellcheck don't want to lose to the Jets ever, so he's gonna beat us and that's what happens. I feel like the teams were evenly matched if anything. I didn't see any talent on the field for the Patriots. There's nothing there. Cam Newton's nothing special at this point. He's nothing. He's a shell of himself and it's sort of unfortunate he's not even that old. He just looks old. He's gotten beaten up over time. There's no receivers on that team. They don't really have a running game. Their defense is tricky, but they don't have a lot of talent. It's just well coached. And yet they beat. And they beat us and, you know, basically made us look. terrible and scored 14 points like we normally do, make us continue to doubt Sam Darnold as a viable option as a starting quarterback in the NFL. And also like all that good defense we were Justin: playing like you like Cam Newton throw for two touchdowns. The guy hadn't thrown for touchdowns in like all year he throws for two touchdowns. Jake: Like, what is the tight end on the New England Patriots? One of them hadn't caught a ball. I'll see zero balls. And there had been no tight end touchdowns and we allowed both. Justin: Yeah, we're good at that. We like to let people like reach their highest potential. Jake: I mean, I think the thing is that like, generous of us, if you go back to the two, I think we got a little rope adoped, because you go back and, and we were remember a Oh, in 13 team and the worst by and the worst in almost any category that you could put together and then we go against the number one defense on the road. And we beat them and it was like what what i guess you're i guess you're something that we go against the i guess nine and four browns and like. And we beat them. And I would say I made it there. Justin: So that that should have that should have really been taken into account. And I don't think it was. Jake: But it doesn't matter any given Sunday. Play like play like a champion. So then so then I think we got a little bit like, oh, this team actually can win a game. Maybe they can beat the Patriots on the road at the end of the season. Oh, actually, wasn't even on the road, was it? It was no, it was just enjoy it. Who cares at this point? But anyway, I just it.
00 Jake: If you just go back three weeks and said before we played the Rams and the Browns, I said, what's the chance of us being the Patriots in the season? If they play everybody who is healthy, we'd be like zero chance. So I was I was unsurprised. And it's just the word. They managed this whole thing. So poorly. It's like, I get it as players like you can't go out there and not try to win. I mean, what are you supposed to do? Like walk around, you're gonna get hurt. So like, you have to go try. I give them all the credit in the world for like, trying and sticking to it and not quitting and all of that. I'm actually I guess I don't disagree. Like I think it ended I think the season ended perfectly for the trash fire that it was because here's here's what we came out of the season that we wanted. First of all, even if we won one, we wanted to not to not go an over, right? We wanted to win one game. Even if we had won one game, we still would have gotten the first pick. That's right. Right? They would have gotten the second pick, no matter what. So, really, our chances of getting that first pick were really low. And so... No, they were really high. Sorry. Um, sorry. Not after we won that game. Okay, but heading into... But heading into week 15. where we were 0 and 13. Yeah, we had 76% chance. I don't know how they calculate that because like every given Sunday, like you said, like any team can win, but 76% chance. And they blow it. They always blow it. I don't care. I think the first round pick is a curse. I don't want it. And here's what came out of the season, right? Well, I mean, the positives we came out with not a team that looked apps is just total trash fire. Like there are some positives on the team. You saw a few, right? There are some players you're excited about. We fired gaze, which is the most positive. I don't care anything that's happened this season. That's the one thing we need to have happened. That's the only thing stopping us from going well, many things, but one of the main things stopping us from going anywhere is that clown being gone. He's gone. They fired him Sunday night. Did they announce any others like on the staff like is the whole staff fire or was it just him? I don't know. I didn't I mean, I think it's very up to well, that's and then that's the greatest news that's ever come. You know, this game was a game. The game was a game that if you said at the end of the season, we went against the Patriots and lost 14 to 28. I'd be like, Yeah, that sounds that sounds right. Doesn't matter what season it was. I mean, it was the best season we ever had like Anyway, so I'm like, I'm very happy as a Jets fan. We have we have Joe Douglas heading up the search. They're going to let him do it. Gase is gone. We have the number two pick. We have a we have two picks in the first round and the next two years. And we have a crap ton of cap room, like I imagine that. And I also imagine that second round pick is like number 34, which is basically a first round pick at second round value. That's good stuff. So I'm like, that all seems really good to me.
01 Jake: I'm I'm I'm pleased. I'm pleased. And there's some talent on that team, especially on the defense. There's some talent there that you're like, OK, some of these guys are not, you know, can be coached into something. So I'm I'm extremely happy. Whether we win or loss again, that was nice going into that game. knowing that it didn't matter, knowing that it wasn't gonna be dropping from like, I've seen these times where the second pick and the sixth pick are one game away. You win one game and you drop from two to six, right? Because there's a whole group in there. Happens to the Jets when we drafted Darnold, like we won an extra game and it was like, don't win that game. We won the game and we ended up drafting six and had to, had to trip, ironically, we trade up to draft the quarterback who we are now three and now we're talking about drafting another one. And then then we had our thing of like, how many times have the Jets drafted at two? Well, that was a question the other day where we were talking like, I can't remember. I mean, oh, you know what? I can pull up at any level. I can pull it up. I mean, we drafted Sanchez at five, but we traded up to get him. There were a couple of four win teams there, but we often landed like pick number six. So last year we had pick 11. Then it was three Williams, three Darnold, six Adams, 20 Darenle, six Williams, prior 18, Milner, nine Richardson, 13, Copels, 16, Wilkerson, 30, Kyle Wilson, 29, Sanchez, five, I mean, I'm going back here. to break Chef Ferguson for going back. Now, we got to go back to John Johnson. He's on Johnson number one. Justin: I'm still here the year after Kishan. Jake: We drafted James Fary right like six overall eight overall. We traded twice to get to eight. We had the first pick in Parcells trading. Arbin Jones 4 Blair Thomas. Two. That's it. That's it. That's the one Blair. As soon as you got back to like Marvin, I was like, oh, Blair Thomas. Number two. What a piece of shit draft pick that one. Justin: Blair Thomas at a Penn State to replace Freeman McNeil. Boo. Jake: Drafted 81 at number three. Oh, wait. Lam Jones 1980 number two first round Let's see. Where was I'm like a hall tune drafted. I don't know now I'm looking at just first round trying to get that see how many times we picked twice So so far boy found two. All right. Well, that's not you know, Oh Joe name it number one 1965 Matt Snell number three These are the guys in the ring of honor, you know, Tom Brown number two guard 1961.
05 Jake: Right. Tom Brown. That's it. Three. So we've only drafted three at the number two pick in the first round, three times in a long history. So all right. I'm excited about it. Look, first of all, it's not like you're I think even when we were drafting three. Thank you. If there's three good QBs, you're like, wow, we're gonna get the third best one. I feel like when you're drafting two, you know you're getting one of two and we've talked about it. We've seen the one twos go and sometimes it's hard to distinguish. You think the two is gonna be better than the one. You think the one, and sometimes they're both trash fire. Sometimes one of them's bad, but like you're getting a top talent at one two. for a quarterback if you're picking a quarterback. So I mean, I mean, you can also look back. I mean, while you're looking at draft, like that that second quarterback picked, whether it be like one, two or whether it be like, you know, like one, five or like, you know, like maybe there's not two top guys. It's like six and 18 or whatever. I wonder. historically how that second quarterback has done compared to either the first guy or guys that just come off way later after because I think of recent like one twos and it's like ones that come to mind recently. I like well James Winston Marcin Marcus Marriota like they went one two and neither neither really successful. The whole Baker, you know that whole draft we talked about ad nauseam you know, the big one that comes to mind is obviously Peyton Manning Ryan leaf and How that was actually like a discussion at the time crazy And then like later on I think it was There was like the, what was the other one that was like a kind of like a weird, for some reason there was a discussion about it and it should never have been. Oh, there was the, there was the two of them. There was the car Joey Harrington year where they both sucked. And then there was the Um... What's the team? Right. Aaron Rodgers. So like, Alex Smith went one overall to the 49ers and then Rodgers just sat there for 20 picks or whatever. And then Green Bay was like, well, this guy's too good. We're just going to draft him. You know, it's like a weird thing. It's hard to. judge. It's definitely I'm reading through the top picks. And it's it's a very like I'm trying to get it off the top of my head. And it's hard. These are the number ones for the last couple years. I'm not doing the one and two but like Joe burl last year. Okay, that's looking probably promising. And your burl Justin: pretty power Murray. I'm I would say that's pretty good. All Jake: right. Baker Mayfield. Okay, you start a Uh, Miles Garrett stud Jared Goff.
03 Jake: Then he gets to Jamis wins. Justin: Jared Goff. Jake: See, that's the Jared Goff's like the argument for why Sam Darnold. Because his well, but he didn't suck for three years. He didn't. But in fairness, he didn't improve until he didn't improve until he got into a different system that worked. Right. Like with a genius offensive mind that actually is not just let's just say it he really is like Sean McVay is a very very ahead of his time young offensive. Coach who took a quarterback that looked completely useless and remember they had the hard knocks that year and we're making fun of jerry goth like. This guy doesn't even know how to call a play. Remember, he's like, I've never called a play in a huddle. And they're like, OK, look, how do you draft a guy? Number one overall, he's never called a play in a huddle. Like, what the fuck is that? And well, now you look at it as like, well, he is actually like pretty decent. And they made a Super Bowl with him as the starting quarterback. And he's not awful. He's not great. He's not like Superdynamic put him in any in any system. And he's like a genius quarterback, but he's good. It's better than where Carson Wentz is right now. Yeah, I don't know. It's just like baffling. That's very odd. Justin: I mean, I will talk about some bullshit. Man, if I was a Giants fan, I'd be pissed. Jake: That was so interesting. I was talking to someone I talked I was talking to a Giants fan this morning and talking about that and it was interesting K. While it's a jerk move. Whatever the Eagles had nothing to gain and they had and it was kind of like whatever it was one of those situations that they had won a game they might have dropped three places in the draft. That means nothing and you get to screw over your rivalry. Like I say, go for it. It's a jerk move, but it's not illegal. It's my take on it. Yeah, you're hot. Whether they won or lost, they were screwing over a rival because whether either which way they were going to keep a rival out of the playoffs and prevent one or the other from winning the division. If they win the Giants win the division and go to the playoffs, if they lose Washington. wins the division against the playoffs. Here's where I think what Philly did was really asinine. They bench Carson Wentz a few weeks ago. To start this rookie, they drafted in the second round named Jalen Hurts. Okay, that was in itself a controversy. They got over it. Now people are excited to see Jalen Hurts. hurts, whatever his last name is. You get into this game where there are stakes, like it's on the line. That team on the other side of the field,
01 Jake: they're playing for their life. They're trying to beat you and get into the playoffs. It is now the fourth quarter and it is a one score game. I wanna see what that quarterback can do. Yeah. What are you doing, Philly? Putting in a third strip? Like don't you just wanna like, see what the guy can do? Like that's a good situation as a test. Like what kind of stupid shit is that? I would have fired that coach immediately. I'd be like, are you out of your mind? Like you have to see what that guy can do. I mean, what are you doing? You're not the GM. Like you shouldn't be worried about the pick, bro. Like your job's to win the game. I don't get it. It made no sense. It's like, why would you take this young quarterback like put him in that pressure situation? It's only a good learning experience for him. You know, this guy Sudfeld is not the answer. Come on. I think Sudfeld's either played on our team or played against us before. I feel like we've gone up against Sudfeld. I'm sure we've lost him in like the preseason or something. All right, let's move on. We are terrible. The search is going on. The search is on. We need to early for me to get into too much the search. I mean, it seems like the rumors are everywhere. You know, is it a college? Is it? You know, someone who's playing now? Is it? What do you want? Like, what's just the ideal candidate? Give me your idea. Okay, don't give me names. Just give me ideal candidate. Like that. Like, just think of what, what kind of where do you want them to come from? What kind of position? What kind of thing do you want them to be known for? Justin: Can I name a former Jets head coach? Jake: Like I want someone in the vein of, or in the mold of, Herr Medwards. Herr Medwards was not an ex- Oh, he was not- We're here to win the game. He was not an ex as an O's coach. He was not like that guy who's the defensive genius or whatever. He was a defensive guy, but, you know, you wouldn't actually know that. He was a head football coach. OK, I'm interested in that. I'm interested in somebody who can come in and not run one side of the ball. Justin: No, like you're gonna run the team and Jake: Like I don't need you running the offense. I don't need you running the defense I want both of those things to be really good. What I want is a guy who brings an identity with him That's what her date Rex Ryan did the same but he was very much a defensive guy and kind of left the offense out to pasture so like yeah, I think a guy like her Medworth's like in that mold of like Well-rounded, can motivate, can speak to younger players. I feel like Herm had that. So that's what I'm looking for. Someone like that.
01 Jake: Oh, he was successful. He made the playoffs three out of five years. I liked Herm. I... I remember he had terrible clock management. His thing was he was so bad at clock management that it was like a joke. So he actually hired a coach to help him with it. Yes. Like, can you just stand over there with a clock and help me out? Tell me what's called time out. I mean, again, it's so hard because like, do you want to just fall along the footsteps of everybody else? I'm trying to think back when's the last time we went to the college ranks and grabbed a top candidate from college? And I think it's been a long time Maybe never like we can't I can't Not in my lifetime the first coach I remember is Joe whatever his name was, Joe Musco, and he was bad. And then I remember Bruce Coslet and Rich Kotite and Parcells, there might've been someone in between there, but none of those guys were college. And that's back to like the early nineties already. So that's like. That's 30 years. Yeah. Gase board Ryan man. Genie Edwards grow. Bellacheck Parcells Parcell. I said Bellacheck again for a minute. Bruce Coslet. Oh Pete Carroll, right? Yeah, he wasn't really college dude. Walton Michael Joe. Hulvic, Haltz, Ship. All right, so to me that feels like, look, we almost if you just look even back the last, they're all coordinators. Coordinator, coordinator, coordinator, coordinator, coordinator. Like those last five from 2000 on, what was Algro, was he a current coordinator before he came to us? He worked on the on our staff. I think actually he was like, he was the guys over there. He was like an offense. I think he was like the wide receivers coach actually. Okay, so not a head. The only reason why he was the head coach that year was because Belichick left and took a bunch of guys with him. Right. Because they were all those guys were on the jet staff like that staff that was amazing that won all those championships and with Brady early like Romeo, Cornell, Charlie Weiss, Bell check. They were on the Jets. Like that was our staff with tuna at the top. So I think this is a good chance to start to try that. Again, we if we haven't tried it forever, it feels like it's a good it's just all coordinators defensive, offensive, defensive. defensive offensive. It's like, okay, maybe it's time to go to the cup to get the next guy to get someone who is up and coming who comes in with brand new ideas, who's very young and really can, you know, collaborate with the with the the players and brings whole new stuffs that he's learned. That kind of is exciting, like that kind of thing. And since we have never, I haven't seen it, certainly in my Jets fandom, it kind of be like, oh, let's try that. Because it's getting the coordinator of the month
00 Jake: off the pile, just I don't know. Even though I want Eric Bellamy, like is it Bellamy? Be enemy. Be enemy. I don't know who you don't, but I don't. I have I have a guy in mind that I want. Who's the guy you want? It is a coordinator. And it's not like in the mold of what I just said, but I think it's the best available dude that I know of. And and for me, that's Arthur Smith, who is the current offensive coordinator of the Titans. He's 38. He's been with the Titans for 10 years and worked his ass off. Basically worked his way up the ranks. He's been an offensive and defensive quality control coach. He's coached the offensive line. He's coached the tight ends. He's done everything and he's coached the quarterbacks and he's been there for 10 years just working his way up steadily. And for the last two years has been their coordinator on offense. and has completely resurrected Tannehill's career after Gace ruined it and is coordinating a team that scores the fourth most points in the league. To me, they don't even have a whole hell of a lot of talent. He just makes it happen. They got a great running back, but to me, they have a great running game. Well, yeah, I know Henry's good, but like you need a running game like, you know, Henry ran for 2000 yards and that's a great individual accomplishment. But I bet any running back would have ran for 14 1500. You know what I mean? What? Just because I would do that good. It's a running game. It's a good, they have a good blocking scheme. They would, they, they, they commit to it. Right? Like, was Thomas Jones that good? Or did we just commit to running? Justin: Yeah, we should we shawm green that good or did we just commit to running? Jake: So here's what I hear. committed to it. Here's my gut, right? I think part of it is well, at first we need to look at who do we have as the general manager, right? If the general manager is really running this, he I think what does he want? He doesn't want someone to come in and be Sort of bigger than him right he wants someone to come in his whose. You know learning and underneath him and takes his direction i think there's a you know a piece also if you're if you douglas is mine you're thinking i'm picking a quarterback, you'd like to have a college guy who knows these quarterbacks who knows young young quarterbacks and like who's good with them and who can. you know, it's been doing the system and also can then devise the system around them, right? Because it's not just saying, Oh, this quarterback can do anything, they can't do anything, we're gonna have to, you know, work with them. So working with the extremely young guy just out of college from a college coach, I think there's a double thing there. So it feels like that's the way they're going to go just from But then I guess the other side of it obviously Douglas has been in the system for a long time
00 Jake: He has lots of friends. He has lots of coordinators he knows and lots of buddies and You would think he would want to go find one of his buddies someone who really gets along with who they're copay You know Capatras and they can they're gonna come up with the schemes together and they're gonna sit in the war room on draft day And they have a they have a same philosophy of how to draft and what to pick and like I so that's important So I think that's the interesting piece is like, where does where does his mind go? Is he wants someone very young? Is we great with young quarterback and talent? Or is he looking at going look, I feel like this Sam kid has got all the talent in the world. He's just being wasted on the current near Jets roster. But let's reboot the near Jets roster. And then he's he's a he's a you know, an above average quarterback, a real head coach, a real offensive coordinator and a real scheme and with real talent around him. By the way, did you see who we've interviewed, like, so far? No. I mean, I've seen the names. So far, I think we've only interviewed two people. We've interviewed Bienemey already. Right. And we just finished an interview with Marvin Lewis, of all people. Justin: Really? Jake: Yeah. And... I'm going to go, I'm actually going to go like Marvin Lewis would be a good head coach for the Jets right now. But again, that's the what head coach like the coach that comes, I think you have to think about the roster. Marvin Lewis would be a good head coach to coach the Jets for two years. Like, basically like, hey guys, you need to grow up. Like, I'll get you from here. Only to here though. I can't get you. See, that's what I'm trying to say. Are we trying to shoot for the moon and like let's win the Super Bowl or are we trying to be respectable? So we're just trying to be respectable. I think Marvin Lewis can get us to be respectable. Think about what he did in Cincinnati. That is a loser, loser, loser team. Like More of a loser than the Jets, historically. That is bottom of the barrel. He took a second round quarterback, Andy Dalton, started him as a rookie, and made the playoffs every frickin' year. Did they win in the playoffs? No, they probably weren't good enough. They're the Bengals. But they were very respectable. They won their division. We had to beat them to get into the playoffs and then go to their house and beat them in their house. Justin: Now, did we beat them? Yes. Were they better? Yeah, we were better than them. But they were, that was a respectable team when Marvin Lewis coached them. The only thing is he's only going to get you, in my opinion, to a certain point. Jake: I don't want any red. I don't want any head coach. Then, then that's not then we're shooting for the stars. We're shooting to win. No, we're starting to build a program. What Joe should be doing is building a program. And he should be building a program around his his philosophies. And and he has the time if if if Douglas had been
01 Jake: here for 10 years already, he's got to take it he's only been your year and a half. Like he's been through one cycle, right? He's had one draft cycle and one free agency cycle because they took that away from him the first year, right? Or they didn't hire him after that right in june july i'm saying he has you know in his kind of if you because it's all about timing rates whether you're in your sixth year or your tenth year or your first year if you're in your first year and you crap the bed ninety nine percent chance you're not getting fired because i give you two years or they give you three years so i like that he's They've given the job he's only been there a year. Now he gets the head coach that fits his style. We go get the quarterback that we think is the thing. And then you've got that, what we always talk about, the three to four year window to be good, right? And then at that point, you've either built a good team that you have to pay the quarterback and whatever, and you're now good, or you gotta reboot again. And basically... we shit the bed with this these choices. Like we shit the bed with switching out Sam Donald every two years with bat with two years of bad coaching. And now we're like, you know, that's the biggest mistake. The biggest mistake that they made was looking back and like Not having fired the Cagney and bulls together Yes, or yeah having bulls even be the head coach when Sam was a rookie like that in and of itself might've been a mistake leaving him for that one year having him be like You might have wanted to like clean house at that point, you know, like you called for it. We said, why are they not just getting why is all of that coach of a rookie quarterback? Justin: Like he had to know that he wasn't going to be the guy to bring the quarterback along. Jake: Like at that point in time, you should know that like, hey, you did draft Bryce Petty and you did draft Christian Hackenberg and neither of them. Granted, not talented, but neither played. So like he didn't build anything. I see guys in the league like, you know, last week or two weeks, Justin: like the last couple of weeks of the season, you end up seeing guys that are like, who the fuck is this guy? Right. Like, right. Like this guy was drafted. Like, who is this and how they win that game? Jake: That really, I think that gets me because now you've got. you've got the reboot again, right? You have a ton of capro. You've got two years of two of two first round picks. You got a new head coach, a pretty brand new general manager. I think this is it feels like you're just on a reboot path, right? You've got all the tools to reboot. So don't not reboot if you have the tools to do it. So get rid of the head coach, clean house. Get get Douglas get his his guy the coach will get his coat his QB and The chance of that being Sam are very slim
00 Jake: I mean, I don't know who's the who's the who's the head coach from USC where it's when Sam played is he now? It's like one of those, you know, like oh, it's the guy who he knew and loved The only thing you might be able to sell is like Juju Smith Schuster is a free agent. That was his guy. Like that's what we threw the ball to, you know. Yeah, all right. So I think that I feel like that's the way they're going to go is that they're going to go reboot down the line. And again, if you could get a third round pick for Sam at this point, I would say take it and run down the road. I like him as a person. I really do. I think he was given a bad deal. I'll rue the day when he's, you know, in the AFC championships or whatever and doing great in five years. And he's, well, he's 29. And we're like, oh, yeah, there he is. There's that kid. But sometimes you just have to realize like, it's not a fit. And it's not going to work. And you have a chance you don't get Obviously, since we've done it only three times since the history of the draft, we don't get these picks very often. Like we didn't even have this to get him. We had the third, you know, we and then he fell to us because the Giants were stupid. We're not. Justin: I mean, honestly, I would say there's a bit. Jake: They should have drafted Josh Allen. Honestly, they'd be in way better shape. So, it should be apparently. Most teams should have. Everybody's looking back going, and remember, he was like the raw guy. He was also the guy that was going to go number one, and people were laughing at it. Like, no, you can't pick him. He's too raw. And honestly, if he would have went to the Browns, he probably wouldn't have worked out. And if he would have went to the Jets, he probably wouldn't have worked out. But the Bills... They put McDermott in place that year and they eased him in. Remember he didn't start like game one. They kind of eased him in. They made the playoffs the year before. They missed the playoffs his rookie year and they were okay with it because they made it last year and they won the division this year. And I think that's why I guess if I had a flip a coin, that's why I kind of want them to reboot. As much as I hate seeing Sam go and that we flubbed it, but three years is enough to get a picture of a QB. It's enough. Like you can make excuses and say you need four or five or 10, but really we always say three years. There's outliers. There's outliers. But there's also people that they got five years and they should have cut it at two. Yeah, like James Wednesday or Marcus Mariano, right? We have a reboot schedule right now. And I think we should do it and reboot because that gives us a longer window. Another four to five year window, right? We said we had four to five years, but we're three years in and the windows pretty much closed. So now we get the chance closing. Now we get the chance. reopen the window, I got four to five years. Caproom. Tons of draft picks, new head coach, new GM, very pretty new.
00 Jake: I think it's time to reboot. So that'd be my wish. I just don't see who trades for Sam Darnold and why. I don't know. I think we just keep them. And that was my dream. That's my dream. I think we keep them. I think we keep them. You said no, kid. Do it. I think we actually just keep him and he's the quarterback. I fucking said this like four weeks ago. No, you said keep him and have him be a back-up. Not that. Not drop the QB at all. Yeah, that's just that's that's. Have have someone who's a coordinator or whoever. Come in. interview and be like, here's what I see in Sam Darnold. Here's how I would use him. You have that second pick. If you were to go pick this dude, here's what will happen. I promise. And here's my vision for it. and be convincing about it. And let's see how that goes, because I'm of the opinion if they pick that tackle from Oregon, Sewell, and you put him in Bechten as bookends and you give him give Sims a year to mature, another year with Crowder, and you draft a receiver at the end of the first round. You're on to something. Oof, oof. I mean, on to something if the coach sees it, if the coach says that's it, I see it right there. And nobody tapped into that thing. I don't know why you got I've been watching you guys for two Justin: years. Why haven't you tapped into that thing? You guys are idiots. I'm here to tell you. Jake: That's the thing. It's it's funny, because every time you if you watch, you do watch all the games, we don't go to the games anymore. But we watch all the games. Every announcer has the same comment. It's like, Sam's not good. at the jets. No one says Sam is just not like they always like this is a guy better somewhere else. I keep always the thing. It's he's like he needs a fresh start. He needs a reboot himself. It's not necessary. Again, I say it. He it's not that he doesn't have the brains. He has the brains. Does he have the talent arm talent? Yes, he does. Does he have the Yes, he does. It's that last piece. Has he matured as a QB and stops making those first year mistakes that you watch these QBs do and it's like no he hasn't he's still making those really bad throws throwing in the triple coverage trying to make it too far not learning when to throw it away. I keep still doing that stuff and he's played too many games now. to not get that. So you'd have to convince me that you had some sort of soothsayer, some sort of, you know, whatever psychiatrists come in and get him or a mentalologist or something, come in and get him to move to that next level because that's the piece of the game that's scary. Because that's the part that loses these games. It's like we're driving, we're up, and then he just throws the most boneheaded. You know interception his interceptions have gone up every year like that. You can't have that That can't be a thing in your stat lines like oh, did you well, how'd your interceptions per year?
04 Jake: Oh, they went up what every year they went up. Yeah. No, that's that's not good. They should go down Right. They don't go up every year That's not what that's not what you're looking for Sorry, they actually have gone down now. We'll give the stats. God damn it. 15 13 12. I'm looking how many games he played though. Yeah, it's all the same. Well, but no, no, it's the ratio, right? 17 touchdowns to 15 interceptions, 19 touchdowns to 13 interceptions, but then nine touchdowns to 11 interceptions. That's a that's a wrong direction. That's that you can't you can't you can't play a starting quarterback start with 12 games and throw nine touchdowns. How many did flat go through? I don't know why you think they'd be his. I don't think there are many. So like it's more of a it's more of a like the Jets often sucked type of thing. Not the quarterback through nine. I think the Jets only had about 10 to 12 throwing touchdowns in them this year. There weren't that many there. His numbers are just not good enough. They're just really I mean, again, just be objective. Like he's he's, he's a it's really hard to be objective when you're watching dysfunction around him. 45 touchdowns 39 interceptions over three years. That's almost a one to one ratio. It's Justin: actually better than I thought. I thought it was going to be like 39. Go look at go look at like the first couple years of I don't know, like a bunch of guys who've thrown for a fuck Jake: ton of yards. Like you're gonna see a lot of that. But he doesn't go for a fuck ton of yards. I know. I'm just saying historically speaking. But you're right. Like Young quarterbacks these days, like, you know, the last 10 years or so, are not, like, to be judged the same as, like, young quarterbacks when I was kind of watching, growing up, watching football, where the guy didn't get a chance for a couple years. Like, if you recall, Chad Pennington, I don't think he started a game until it's third or fourth season. I don't even think we saw him on the field till his fourth season. Like, I don't think we even knew who he was, but he was a first-round pick. Justin: So it's like, wait a minute, this is fucked. Like... Wait, Mahomes is like the best quarterback in the league. He did not play his rookie year. Jake: Sure, but Sam did and should be progressing. Maybe he shouldn't have. No, no. Justin: Oh, oh, oh. Jake: Listen to your many times. We knew he should have started. He won the job. He did everything right to be on the field. It was not he was not the whole like give the guys six games so he can come out and be kind of crappy for a couple of games. No, he was ready. And that's why he was picked because he was the most quarterback NFL ready player. Let's not forget that was what he was. Then I blame the Jets. Then I blame the Jets and only the Jets. Justin: And why can't he be like, you know, turned around? Jake: All right, let's talk playoffs. Let's do that. I think we should. Let's get to it.
00 Jake: I got some fun stats. Let's start the playoffs. You have some fun, what? I have a fun history. So in the beginning of the season, we make picks on who we get with Super Bowl. We do, don't we? Yeah. So how do we do? Remember who you picked? Not at all. Okay, so you picked the Jets. Super Bowl to be played by Baltimore versus Seattle. Okay, I want to change it with Seattle the winner on a change it. Okay, not change it. I'm gonna change it. That's not a podcast. I I'm in the playoffs. Both teams are in the playoffs. Yeah, and I picked the Chiefs and Rams and the Chiefs winning back-to-back Super Bowls. All right. I want to change my pick. So can I change them right now? Now that we're now that we're here and we both did a good job. We both got our teams to the playoffs. Manage that well. I'd like to I'd like to pick a new Super Bowl and a new Super Bowl champion. Okay. I'm pretty convinced that the Super Bowl matchup is going to be between the Buffalo Bills and the Tampa Bay box. I don't think the Bills can get by the Chiefs. They are the only team that can get by the Chiefs. Otherwise, the Chiefs are winning the Super Bowl. The only team that can beat the Chiefs are the Buffalo Bills. They are actually that good right now. They have the quarterback, they have the defense, they have the weapons on offense to keep up with the Chiefs. That's gonna be a fun one. I hope that that's the championship game. That's a good one. Also, the Bills are gonna have fans in their stands until that game. So that's gonna be a real deal thing. That's gonna be bananas in Buffalo. I don't know why that's a thing, by the way, like the playoffs start so COVID disappears and you can have fans like I don't understand that. They're doing massive, massive testing. They are basically to go to the game, like if it was us going to the game, you get to go at the stadium. You go get tested at the stadium three days in advance, then come back. and then show and prove that we got tested. No tailgating mass on go in only 6700 player 6700 fans. I knew it. Yeah, I mean, of course I would do it play. I mean, we haven't seen a playoff game at home in a billion years. All right, so you're saying you're picking Raven. Sorry, No, but over bills. OK, over bills, Tom Brady. wins the Super Bowl. Correct. Oh, really? Really? He has to. He has to do it for another team. Because he is the best ever. And he has to just do it. It'd be fun just to see that it kind of crap on whatever. But I don't think so. I think the only thing I'm not I'm very confident in my chief's pick. I just don't think there's a team out there that pretty pretty good pick.
00 Jake: It's a really good pick. And then it's like, okay, and then I have the Rams. So it's either it's basically either the Rams or how am I who could buy it? I don't think the Saints has the power. And so the team if it's not the Bucks, to me, it's Bucks because the Tom Brady Justin: about the Packers. But then I brush them aside, actually in the playoffs. I don't buy it. Yeah, I don't get it. I don't think they're going to be. I don't see it. Jake: Go to the Packers in the championship game and win. Justin: I mean, the Giants have beaten them in Green Bay. Both years they won the Super Bowl. They went to Green Bay and went through them. Jake: I think was so good I'm sticking with it. You should stick with it. You have Chiefs Rams. I don't like the Rams though. I don't think that's happening. I don't know. I feel like they have a very good defense and they have a very good head coach and a quarterback who's good enough to win. I don't know. I just think they'd be right back in there. All right. Let's. By the way, did you see we're going to pick these in a second? Did you see what happened on the Browns? With losing all their players or? Their head coach. No. Oh, your head coach has COVID and you can't coach. It's so browns like this is what would happen to the jets by the way if we made the playoffs for the first time in like 50 years like they just did. Yeah, our coach would be or something yeah i mean can you believe it like their head coach their first year head coach got them to the playoffs. Sorry dude you gotta sit this one out. How do you prepare like how do you get going so browns and it's why i just think. There's zero chance that they're going to make it anywhere past us. All right, let's pick the games. It's unfortunate. It really sucks. Like, no, I kind of hate the Browns at this point. I don't know. I'm like anti Browns because the whole, you know, what's his face? Baker Baker thing. Yeah. Justin: All right. Let's do this. So we're going to do the Jack Kingdom. Pa Jack Kingdom pick him. Jake: Um, there's the bills are in here, but we'll pick them normal. We won't do the wait for the AFC East or any of that. Yes. And I made my picks in a pool this morning. Oh, brutal. And it was hard, and I don't remember who I picked, and I'm totally going to pick different teams this time around. So I would like to keep that consistent, but I forgot already. Let's do this. All right. So we started off Saturday, one o'clock. Buffalo hosts Indianapolis. Um, Buffalo is favored by six and a half. And I think Buffalo wins this kind of going away. Like they're going to, I think they're going to blow Indy out. So I am, I've been picking the wildcard games with the spread for whatever, 10 years now, um, cause I've been running that pool that they're in the other one of and wildcard games in my gut feel.
02 Jake: are always very close. I don't know why, but I think Buffalo is the better team, and I think they have every chance to blow them the freak out. I just don't think that they have or to blow out teams. I just don't think they have it. In Indianapolis isn't a bad team. Like they don't have a bad quarterback or not missing anything. Like they're a good team. I just think it's gonna be close to that. Buffalo's gonna win but I don't think they're gonna cover the six and a half. I just think the crowd's gonna be absolutely out of their fucking minds for the first time this year. Yeah 6000 yeah I know I get it it's more than zero so I think that's a big deal. Understood I think it's a huge deal. And then she was 6000. It could be 600. They're gonna make the noise. It's gonna be loud. They're gonna be they're not even gonna be drunk They're gonna be drunk as fuck. They're in Buffalo. They're not yet. Nothing else to do. How loud are they gonna be? I'm gonna arrive very drunk Justin: All right, I know we drunk from the night before trust me how Seattle is Jake: hosting the Rams This is at for 40 on the East Coast and Seattle's favored by four. And I think it's just I think in the other pool is like four and a half, if I recall, and I remember picking the Rams. And I remember picking the Rams because I didn't like that. It's in a weird zone that four, four and a half. I think it's a three point game this game. So I don't know who wins, but I'm going to take the Rams. Well, I just have the Rams going to the Super Bowl. And I kind of just have to ride or die with them. So ride or die, baby. And then we have our prime time match up on Saturday night. Not a prime time match up. You know, it's weird. It's a division winner, obviously. This is the most out. This is the most crappy thing I've ever seen the NFL put on the screen. Yeah, but this is new. I've been in the 7-9 team. Like, what the? Yeah, but this must be the networks, CBS and Fox protecting games. You know what I mean? They can protect certain games and send them to primetime or send a game to the NFL network. Go to the NFL network to the abyss. I feel like that's what happens here. This is the abyss. This is the worst game of the six, basically. Justin: Yeah, it's the worst game, Jake: but it's got some star power to it. You know, you got Tampa out Washington, Tampa favored by eight, Tom Brady in prime time. That's kind of the thing, right? And Alex Smith has a good story to him. There's a nice storyline there with Alex Smith coming back off that gruesome injury. So the line is eight, it's very high. I'm inclined to pick Tampa, so I'm going to do it. I think they're going to win by a lot in prime time. I think it's going to be a little much for Washington to overcome like the prime time playoff thing with Tom Brady on the other side. So I'm going to pick Tampa. I think it's I think they can do it.
03 Jake: I have them in this put this is what in the other pool. I have Washington with eight and a half. In this pool, I have Tampa. So clearly, I think it's going to be that point game is what you're going for. That's what's gonna happen. I don't know. I just again, down gravy in the playoffs. It's that it's that it's that wildcard weekend magic. I just think it's hard to blow out teams in the wildcards. But if there was a team that's gonna do it, it's gonna be Tampa Bay for Washington. Justin: Yeah, it would be Washington, the football team getting blown out. Jake: You know, they're not good. They're seven and nine. I need a rule in the NFL. You must go nine and seven. You have to go better than 500. You have to have a 500 or better. Like 500 or better. You can't go in with a losing season into the playoffs. Justin: That just makes no sense. I know. There's nobody else even in the NFC though that I would say like deserves to be in ahead of them. Fine, but that's what there isn't like that's kind of the whole thing that NFC was so bad. Jake: I hope this is a huge blowout like a 42-2 game just so they can so the NFL learns their lesson. Like don't let in these teams that aren't good against teams that are much better. Like it's just going to be a blowout. I know. They won the division. What are you supposed to do? They should actually just know what it is. They should get a pass. Tampa should have gotten a bye. And you don't have to play. Don't have to play the team. You feel good for guys like Chase Young. You know, he's drafted, you know, second overall or whatever. And and, you know, he. You put on a good show on defense. I mean, they have a good defensive line. That's the only thing for Washington that if you're going to watch this game, like it might surprise the fuck out of you. That's very low scoring in the first half because that Washington defensive line has some studs on it. Justin: So anyway, let's keep going into Sunday. Jake: We've got Baltimore. Going to Tennessee and on the road Baltimore's favored and that's bullshit because Tennessee's good So I'll just take Tennessee and the three points at home. Thank you very much Yeah, I agree. I thought it was one of those like the being the year this they seemed unstoppable They were like this unstoppable mass and then I was like No, not so much. I don't know. That's what happens when you have a gimmick offense around a gimmicky quarterback that happens to be a really good athlete that can run around people for a while and then that stops and then you have to throw. Yeah. And Tennessee has has the they're like old school is like, we're just going to run it. You're not going to stop us. And then when you think you can, we'll just throw some balls and catch them. It can be a high scoring game. There's no defense on Tennessee. So this will be an interesting one. New Orleans is hosting Chicago. Biggest line of the week, it's 10. I don't know what to do with this game. I mean, I know New Orleans is gonna win. There's no way Chicago goes on the road and beats the Saints.
01 Jake: That's not happening. Give me the sayings Mitch is going to fall on his face. Yeah, at in New Orleans, we've been there again. There's no fans, but still I think they're going to have fans. Are they going to have fans in that one too? I don't know. They had fans in New Orleans when the college game was there. Why wouldn't they let fans into the place? I've seen fans in their stadium, but it is indoors. So maybe that's the thing. It seems extremely. lopsided tens a lot. I would normally not go against 10. Yeah, and the other pool is nine and a half and I picked Chicago. So apparently I'm all over the map. I'm going here. I'm going to flip it right now and flip it to Chicago. Screw it. Justin: All right, here's the last one. And this is a good one. I actually think this is a nice capper to the weekend. Jake: So we have Pittsburgh hosting Cleveland. And the line is Pittsburgh favored by six at home. No head coach for Cleveland. I think that's a problem on the road. The lights are going to be bright. Too bright. Pittsburgh's been there before. Quarterbacks got a ton of experience. I think they went by a touchdown. Give me Pittsburgh. Yeah, I mean, I also didn't show them anything last week and hung in there. So almost one. I don't know where they played the original. They played three times this year or twice this year. So this is the third. It's hard to go back to back first of all beat a team. But last week Pittsburgh was just like, look, we don't need to win this. You guys back a quarterback. Yeah, the whole time. Big Ben played zero snaps. This is the one that I think is just going to be an absolute ass whooping. Like, I feel like this is going to be the prime time games or shit. What the fuck? It'd be very, very bad game. It's going to be like 42. 12 or something. I just don't think they're going to get anywhere. All right, well, that's some playoffs. I don't think we've done a playoff. Frickin or even talked about or done. I don't think we've done a podcast. We didn't talk about the playoffs this year in any of the scenarios because we were about 12 games out of it. Um, in week 13, so we just stopped talking about it. Uh, usually we have like, you know, a couple of conversations about like Justin: this team versus that, you know, whatever. Jake: We know promises, but we might come back. Uh, maybe we should come back before this. Super bowl. Yeah. Then maybe post super bowl. like free draft coming down. Or free agent frenzy, like we used to do. Oh yeah, we should have a frenzy, because we have money, so. Yeah, so we have some things to spend. So that'll be fun. All right, until then, as always, it's Justin, it's Jake. Let's go Jets.
12 Jake: Thanks for watching! You
