00:03 Jake: This is episode 62 of the Jet Kingdom Podcast for Tuesday, December 29th, 2009. Win and In. Justin: of the women. Jake: Welcome to the Jet Kingdom Podcast. Wow. Wow, on this side of the very very surprised and uh... Long time since we've had a podcast, Isle, Digital Isle. It's Jake! And welcoming back for the last time in 2009. It's my buddy Justin. Hey Justin, how you doing? Justin: I'm doing great! You know, the last time we spoke we were talking about the Jets making the playoffs potentially where we had the p-word going and We skipped a week just so that we could continue to talk about P-word without putting curses in the middle and seriously we had so many gifts come our way since we've last spoken from the schedule gods from the player gods from the everything going right gods to you know santa caldwell and all these things going our way uh very very unlike the jets uh around very very very unlike the jets usually things go again against us but uh wow what a what a roller coaster two weeks it's been Jake: Well, let's get to the agenda, because we'll get to a lot of stuff. This might be a long one, folks. Don't know how long it'll be yet, but it might be long. So we're going to talk briefly, because Justin only wants us to say it briefly, but we'll talk a little bit about the Jets Falcons and the situation of us not doing our last podcast. It was not because we lost. We actually said we wouldn't probably do it until this week anyway. Anyway, then we'll talk about the Jets vs Colts. talk about sitting and starting players. We'll give our nights and play the game for that thing. Then let's talk about the Pro Bowl, which came out actually just moments ago. So we can talk about who made the Pro Bowl and why, maybe some people who we thought shouldn't. And then we'll go over our thrown picks for the last couple of weeks quickly. And then we'll do our thrown picks picking every game for this week. And then the AFC will break down with a little bit more intelligence and scores. And then we'll call them intelligence. And of course talk about the Jets versus since the game and what we can expect. And maybe a little bit of the safer the the bye bye to the stadium. Justin: So let's kick it off with the we got question from Twitter.
03:02 Justin: Oh, and of course, sorry, the Tweeterverse. Can't forget, we have questions. Jake: We have more than a few actually, so we'll get to those at the end of the show. So hang in there. Let's start with the Jets versus Falcons. So let's just put it out there. Justin: Let me handle this part of the show. Jake: Well no, but I need to let the audience know why we didn't have a podcast last week. We've been very good this year. Justin: You do that, then I'll handle the rest. Jake: Okay, so I was actually on a Christmas cruise as it were so I was in I was actually on a ship they were only showing two games down in Florida and one of them happened to be the Jets. So I actually got to watch the whole game. I was not not the best moment, but I did get did get to watch the whole game and watched What was pretty much? Exactly what I had feared all see or what's happened to us all season long, which is that? The Jets go out they play shut down defense all week. Oh all game and then within the last five minutes let whatever needs to happen for the other team to win that's what they let happen whether it needs to be a running play or whatever they let them come down score and then we just can't you know we don't have the firepower and offense to make the run in the last second so that's what I saw and they lost. I also sitting with my wife who then even worse watched the the titans I think kick a field goal in overtime to beat them so so you to handle the rest of it. Justin: Umm, we lost, it didn't matter, let's move on. Jake: Okay, so then I think the entire universe, again, I was on a ship so I didn't really get a lot of the news, the entire universe that is Jetfan said, that's it kids, we're out of it. Including our head coach by the way, who had no idea. Justin: He had no clue that we could still make the playoffs. Jake: Mathematically, this is like what they always say, and I always say as a fan, this is where, you know there's that part of the season where you say, well we're not mathematically eliminated yet, there's that part of the season you say that, and you always think, God, that sounds so stupid. This is the year that the not mathematically eliminated actually made sense. Yeah, because we were not mathematically eliminated. Justin: The Jets just had really... You know what, it was very lucky. A lot of the teams played each other that we needed to lose, and the right chips fell the right way. Let's just say all four teams, three of them we Jake: absolutely had to have happened, and one was like a freaking gift on top of it. But basically all three teams, so, uh, Pittsburgh had to be Baltimore. Dolphins had to be beat by Tennessee, and then what was the other one? Justin: Was it Denver losing? No, before Denver lost the get- that was already decided. It was Jacksonville losing to New England, I believe? Jake: Yes, and it was Jacksonville losing, which that was probably going to happen. But then it was, yeah, then we got the gift of Denver, because Denver was still fighting for a spot. Justin: That one didn't even matter. It had no bearing on us.
06:02 Justin: It did! Before the Denver game at night, it had no bearing on us. Yes it did because it knocked them from being the fourth seed. By the time the Jets played, we knew you win two, you're in, you lose, you're out. Nobody else has any bearing on anything, meaning if we lost, we could not back our way in. So it did not matter what anybody else did at that point. Everything went well and correct before the game started. And then everything turned out. uh, peachy. Cause, uh, Santee Caldwell decided that, you know, two and a half game, two and a half quarters was enough. Uh, so, you know, the, the, I'll make this statement and then, and then we can talk about the game, I guess. Um. in. The Jets took the game, meaning the Colts were winning and they basically said, here it is, it's yours for the taking, but the Jets had to go take it, and we did. Jake: So... Justin: We beat the Colts we beat the 14-0 Colts we could have very easily down 15-10 Not scored another point But we did we You know it's very very funny I was sitting here with a bunch of giant fans in my place because they were all over watching the giant game uh... earlier and they were all depressed and whatnot uh... well because you know there's on their own their state that their their official closing of giant stadium uh... you know we're sitting there and and we're all saying if the jets could really just do a job in the first half of hanging in and just slowing the Colts down to the point where you just hang in, you've done your job because you know Peyton's not going to play the rest of the game and at that point it's yours for the taking. And that's exactly what happened. The Jets played well enough in the first half to only be down 9-3. That's pretty good against Peyton Manning. You know, I don't think I don't think they did they give up a touchdown. I don't... or they did, but we blocked the extra point or whatever, but um... That's pretty good. The defense played okay. They didn't get to Manning, which I thought was going to be a key. I thought that they should have gotten to him early, knocked him around a little bit, and then they would definitely hold him.
09:01 Jake: But they got to him, they just didn't. If you want the... if you go back to the coaches team... very much they didn't they didn't sack him but I think this is it's like that it's kind of like that the Patriots game we I don't think we sacked Brady and I think we didn't even hit Peyton Manning we did no if you know he was on the ground a few times yes he was very rarely they talked about it afterwards they said well he was actually getting pushed to the ground a few times because there's he was actually asking for the flag You know saying it was a little late So I'll just give you the you know I do have a lot to say about this game But I actually was hampered in this game because I was coming back from my trip on Sunday All plans being equal I was gonna land around 320 and Newark Airport I was then I had at least an hour to drive which is probably a 25 minute drive back to where I live And you know back on the other side of Manhattan, so thinking okay, well, you know, it's an hour hour and a half I'll get in at the end of the first quarter Well net net lanes the planes late cars hard to find and then we hit an hour and a half traffic Going into the Holland tunnel, so I was listening to the game in and just furious But you know with what I was hearing and then you know, just sitting in traffic, which is never fun so I actually listened to two and a half quarters You know and then I got home about the end of the third quarter so that's how I got home things were actually looking good Peyton was out. I think we'd already run back to touchdown Justin: We'd already back to touchdown to open the half which was right so then at that point Jake: It was kind of like we have a shot at this game, so I only saw sort of the end But we had the lead and we were just picking what's his face off, Freeman, what is his name, painter, off left and right. So, yeah, to me this was, it is a gift. And to be honest, no matter how the Jets, if they get into the playoffs or not, there's going to be a lot of scrutiny over how they got in. They got in with a gift, they backed in, they swept in, they skated in, they crawled in. Justin: They lost a couple games they should have won. So this was nice. Jake: Totally, but you know, I think the point is that this is a team that in a lot of the people, fans eyes, doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs and was kind of given a gift, maybe two, and we'll talk about that in a second. again. but uh... so it's so i get night the hard game to really talk about because it was it was sort of the ones was the twos uh... i still think they played well for the ones the ones played well the twos played well like twos and they lost the game. I don't think it's fair to say the Jets would have lost this game 100% if Peyton had been back in. He was not throwing the ball well. He was... Justin: Oh, I think it's fair to say that the Jets were losing the game. Jake: We were losing by points, but if we were losing 31-2, 31-3, I'd be like, oh, okay, well, we were going to lose a game. By five points. Justin: We were losing 15-9. 10. 15-9. We were losing.
12:00 Jake: I think it was, okay. All right, 15-9. Justin: We never had 10 on the board. Jake: Okay, so 15-9, we're losing by six points. Justin: Maybe it was 15-10. You might be right. Eh-eh-eh-eh Jake: in any event but that's not being beaten and and then they still had the starters in wait they still had their starters in when we ran it back so we took the lead with their starters they didn't Justin: pull the a starters until after that no they they did not pull their starters until they had a lead they were winning 15 10 they did not score another point but their starters were still in the game what was the game 9 And to start the half Brad Smith ran the ball back for a touchdown which made it 10-9. The Jets then kicked the ball off, they scored, made it 16- Or they went- They went 2 and they didn't get it. Right, they didn't get it, so it's 15-10. And then the Jets got the ball, they didn't score, they punted. They pinned him deep and at that point the culture of 1510 and they decide to bring painter in the game and to start to start that drive at at the Wherever it was five six seven yard line and that that was essentially the game because they were winning but then they you know they they got the ball back and this painter guy fumbled it at the at the seven so They were waiting to get the lead back with Manning. It looked as if they could have scored any time They got the ball to me at least in that second half if Manny would be playing. Jake: I mean, I guess. But it will never. We'll never know. We won the game. We won the game. So let's talk about, let's give out some 19 plays. Let's give out some love. Yeah, give out some love. Give me your night and play the game for the Colts game. And we'll skip the sovereigns game. Justin: Yeah, I skipped that game. I think my player of the game is a guy who's never earned this award. Jake: How do they survive without... how did the players survive without getting this award? Justin: I don't know, but this guy's never earned it. It's his first time earning this award. My play of the game is rather simple to choose, so I'll say that one first. It's the kickoff return. It's clearly the play of the game. Clearly. We are not scoring. points and that got some points on the board and it turned the whole You know if we didn't run that back We weren't scoring on that drive manning still in the game They could have very very easily gone up 16-3 and at that point the games out of control So a huge huge play by Brad Smith. My player of the game is Sean Green He played a hell of a game. He and Thomas Jones ran the shit out of the ball, and it was Sean Green in the third and fourth quarters that was very fresh, and busting bigger runs, like gashing through, going for six, seven yards at a time. This was that really, this was that Jets running game that you see where they beat the crap out of the other team in the first half,
15:04 Justin: and they just continued to- pound and pound and pound and they might not go for more than 50 to 60 to 70 yards in the first half but by the end of the game they have 200 yards because they've pounded the crap out of you with two different running backs and Sean Green ran for 95 yards 5.9 per carry with a longer 21. He's my player of the game Jake: and your play of the game was the kick off return yeah I you know I was not gonna pick this kickoff turn is too obvious yeah captain obvious I know but but I was going to pick I was gonna pick I thought was gonna be sneaky and pick green so I will not pick green and instead I beat you I'll go defensive play the game uh... clearly the clearly the uh... the sack the strip sack and then touchdown it you have to give that although when you look at it was a lot of players who did it now without but the i think the offensive lineman for the colds actually had the ball in his hands like he was going to land on it and they would have kept that ball and i don't know what would happen after that but whatever But then the other guy came in and knocked it out and then landed on it the fourth fumble went to pace And then the recovery went to Marcus recovery. I think went to Douglas yeah, but I'm gonna give my play of the game I'm gonna give it to my boy Lowry Dwight Lowry for that awesome pick Love that pick That was a great pick. I mean, it was just, that was sort of the seal, that was sealing the deal. I think at that point Painter had started to come back, started to kind of make a couple passes and like you're just like, oh my god, is this rookie going to come and beat us like a drum? Listen, we've been beaten by rookie quarterbacks throughout this season. Chad Henney twice. Freaking. and Gaffin the bills like Fitzgerald or whatever the hell I mean he's not a rookie But you know like we've been beaten by the the the non-starter, so it's not like it hasn't happened But that that pic was was something else so I'll give it to that And that wraps up that game, but now let's talk about the scenario so now Are there scenarios well let's do it just what's I don't really understand all of the scenarios in the AFC Justin: So I'm not equipped to talk about them all Jake: So, let's talk about one thing. So the cult fans right now are having kittens. Justin: Frogs them. Jake: They are basically saying they want their money back, they didn't pay for this, they're saying it was a mistake. So give me your, since you've spent a lot of time today thinking about this. I have. What do you think sit them or play them? I Know that we've actually seen the result of doing that. I would have played them Justin: Now here's the thing If the Jets were 14 and oh so I'm putting myself in those shoes oh Jake: Jesus yeah, I don't even know thing imagine that there's absolutely no I was fucking there's no fucking way Justin: I would be happy with what transpired
18:15 Justin: on Sunday. both of those things and I want to be one of the greatest teams in the history of teams. And as Peyton Manning, selfishly, I want to be one of the greatest players of all time. And if he does, if he would have done that, I mean really it's the quarterback. So you look at the quarterbacks of those teams and you say, wow, you know. He would have been one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time if they go 19-0 in the Super Bowl. Now that's the other thing, they've done this before. What we don't know is that what they did on Sunday will absolutely win them the Super Bowl. We don't know that Jake: I can almost say that's not the thing though, it's not whether they do win the Super Bowl It's whether they get hurt and take the chance to win the Super Bowl Justin: But what I can tell you for 100% certainty is that what he did on Sunday did not guarantee them a spot in the Super Bowl or a victory in the Super Bowl. Jake: Agreed. It only prevented the reverse. So you weren't theoretically... Well it did. It prevented the... Pain Manning didn't get hurt. Justin: Sure. But he's also played every single game in his entire career. He hasn't gotten hurt ever before. Jake: And I think that's, there's a couple of things about this. Well, first of all. At the very least to give the Colts a couple things on the Colts the state of the thing I'll play double that one is they said they were gonna do this This shouldn't be a surprise to anybody right no no fan that showed up though on Sunday should have been like why did you sit? No, no they said in advance at the beginning of the season. We are not going over 16 and 0 Justin: We are going Jake: I agree, and you go back and that's sort of the other argument that the time that they actually won the Super Bowl they actually played straight through. They actually played. They need to get to that point. But whatever, they weren't undefeated, so who knows. So I agree that if you have a plan, I like that you stick to it. Stick to the plan, that makes sense. I don't agree- against the giants, they probably played better in the playoffs because of that game,
21:02 Jake: because they didn't take their foot off the pedal. And then every time that the Colts have rested their play, they have come out and looked flat and in fact lost lost. But he was not not month But here's the thing here's the thing that I kind of you know I go back to there's no right way to do this, right? and It all end up at the Super Bowl. So if they hit play let's say they had played on a I know but if you don't make the Super Bowl either way. You've- the wrong decision. That's not true. Yes it is. If they play 16-0, people look at the Patriots now and they're like, they shouldn't have been played. They shouldn't have been played. They wouldn't have done it. Why are they going to Justin: 16-0? That's not true. They went to the Super Bowl and lost because a guy caught the ball against his Jake: head. I mean really, when you look at it. There's a couple other things that happen, but I agree. But what I'm saying is, if Peyton goes into that game and let's say, you know, they threw Reavis on a, or you know, Rhodes on a safety blitz. Blindsides Peyton Manning, the guy goes out with a concussion. Justin: Well, we know that's not happening because Kerry's not getting to him. Well, that's true. Jake: Well, let's just say that happens. The whole fan place goes crazy. So it's like you can't win in this situation. The only way you can win is win the Super Bowl and then it doesn't matter how you got there. Right, if they win the Super Bowl this year, no one will care how they got there. Maybe some fans will be like, well, you could have gone 16-0 and got the Super Bowl. My guess is, and I just, I don't know, I mean, I didn't pick the Colts to be in the Super Bowl, so I guess that's, you know, for me to say it. I think they're a great team. I think that they, I think sometimes they get away with beating OK teams, but then when they have to go three teams in a row in the playoffs and beat them all, I don't think that they do that very well. I don't know. Maybe that's just my thing. Because by usually when you're playing in the playoffs, you're playing some of the best defenses. And generally, it's been shown that those best defenses can shut down the best offenses. The Giants shut down the Patriots. The Giants had one of the best defenses, they shut down the Patriots. They didn't let them score. Justin: I think this is what 10 years actually uh references when the pats won their first super bowl they beat the rams and that rams team was one of the best offenses ever best offenses best i think you give me best offense best defense went in there and beat them bet them beat them on defense really and the colts generally don't Jake: generally don't have as good defense and of course it's always masked by the really good offense but whatever
24:15 Justin: Pow. Alright, so let's to going into week 15 and we tied on week 16 and we tied week 16 with one week to go. Jake: This thing goes to the end of the Super Bowl. Oh nice try. Ah, alright, I'm still winning. You're still winning by a few. We won 11 and 5. Justin: We won 11 and 5. That's why we did. Jake: Yeah, that's not bad actually. I did pretty well. I'm trying to see against my brother-in-law did I take how many points? It's a lot of home teams. Yeah, well it's tough and this week's tough. I was actually making my picks going, jeez, this is not an easy week to do this. All right, so let's get to it. We're gonna make our NFL picks and then come around the AFC East and then talk about the game of the day. And the flex game will talk all about that Deanna second or two. So let's go right now Justin: Well, it I'll pick my Atlanta Falcons to finish on a good note and maybe finish 9-7 here. Jake: So are you conceding that your Atlanta Falcons aren't going to the Super Bowl since you picked them to go to the Super Bowl? Justin: Well I did pick them to go to the Super Bowl, yes. and and they can't make the Super Bowl but again they can finish 9 and 7 and that's respectable and if they didn't have as many injuries they might have uh you know Jake: they might have had a injury excuse wow that's a good one Justin: you know starting quarterback misses a bunch of games down stretch you know Jake: that's not easy yeah yeah whatever uh yeah I agree let's get off the display I think Elinah will try to finish off the game well though though play well and i think when wins the game uh... next game we have is jackson bill at cleveland jackson jaguars i think our genius officially out and man genius when they are on the ball in a row Justin: uh... kyron's think jackson those fish lee out i think that they're on the bubble are they not I don't think they can make it you're right.
27:01 Justin: You're right, I don't believe they can make it there at 7 and 8. And the man genius looking like the man genius! Ah, genius. You know, he's got a new boss there in Cleveland. Just wait, they'll sack him. They'll keep him around, maybe they won't, but either way I think Cleveland's winning the game. I think they got something going. And up there in the cold, blistery weather in Cleveland, I'm gonna pick him. Jake: Alright, let's see, I'm going back there now. Yeah, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Jacksonville. Now I'm going to go against you. I'm going to go to Jacksonville. Jacksonville was one last stand. He's not that much of a genius. Mangini is known for losing towards the end of the season. Fuck him, he's going to lose. this. Maybe the 49ers got there's a lot of shit games Justin: 49ers against st. Louis Rams. I don't think either one have any shot of Jake: . Not even interesting matchup. the new york giants against minnesota so now just a little bit of intrigue last night minnesota got beat by chicago she's the sixth in whatever chicago uh... farv has made his way to the nfl in two thousand yet but wait he didn't throw a pic or anything yesterday he actually had a very good game is more peter soon as a coffee at the ball but whatever Huh? Justin: He's losing. Jake: Well, he is losing. He's losing in December, which is not a good thing. glared at one game now Philly is the two seed and Minnesota's the three seed and if Philly wins against Dallas this week they become they keep the two seed so I this is an issue I think this is still gonna play tough Giants looked horrible Justin: can't they even move up to one Can they move up to one or is... Jake: Oh no no no, Saints have one locked. Justin: Oh right, Minnesota if they won could have potentially moved up right? Jake: Yes, then they could have been. So not only did they lose the chance to move up one, they've actually gone down. Justin: They might even have to play a game now. Jake: They might. Right now, if the season ended today, they would actually play a wildcard team. They'd be the three speed team. Justin: Knowing that... and knowing that the Giants suck my balls, I'm gonna pick Minnesota. Jake: Yeah, I agree. Minnesota win that game. Saints, who again looking pretty poor, at Carolina, who didn't do too bad against the... Justin: the Giants last week. They've been playing great. They they've been on the road and beaten the crap out of some pretty good teams. They beat Minnesota then they beat the Giants back to back weeks. I'm going to stick with them. They're hot and New Orleans is going the other way. So I'm picking Carolina at home to finish off the season strong for John Fox get to eight and eight. They already announced John Fox will be back for next season. So they want to win on a strong note.
30:04 Justin: So I'm gonna pick Carolina. Jake: Yeah, I don't think so. I think Saints will still win this game. Carolina's giants are bad, Saints aren't that bad. I think Saints win. We're gonna have a lot of differences. Let's go Chicago at Detroit. So yeah, Chicago color actually. Justin: Four touchdowns. Four touchdowns. I'd say Cutler actually played really, really well. I hadn't really seen him play all year. All I've been seeing is his crappy numbers and thinking, boy, am I glad that the Jets didn't give up a whole bunch of stuff for him because we have a quarterback of our own who can throw interceptions, but he hasn't been in the league for four years, so it's okay. Any case, he showed his potential and... and winning a big game and I cannot see uh Detroit winning with I think it's uh Stanton Jake: Drew Stanton it's their quarterback right now uh I'm gonna go with Chicago yeah I think Chicago wins this game even off a short week agreed huge game the actually the only other game that probably could have been flexed this was the game I thought was going to be flexed when I learned here's why it didn't you know a little interesting thing here's what didn't I do can you can you please give me the tidbit Peter King talked about this and it's kind of mean there's always a lot of reasons why but here's here's Here's one of them. First of all, they're They're both in the playoffs. Here's the reason that they think it happened. In the agreement between the NFL and NBC on this whole flexing thing, one of the things is they have to flex evenly over, I think it's the two or three, maybe three year period. So over the three year period they have to flex just as much NFC games as AFC games. That's what we're talking about. So, Well as of whatever this last week, they had flexed three more NFC games than AFC games. Justin: Oh, they had to catch up with the AFC. Jake: So I think there's only one more year left, which is next year, of this flex agreement. So yes, they have to catch up with the AFC by flexing an AFC game. So I think that's what it is. Justin: That's interesting because there's actually other AFC games that could have... potentially that they could have put on like I was I actually did not think this jet game had even a chance I thought it was either gonna be the the Dallas Philly game or the the Pittsburgh Miami game that we'll talk about in a little bit but anyway back to yes everything's gonna win uh I will I'll pick Philly because I still don't trust Dallas Jake: Yeah, I think for when this came in since I did pick pick the Super Bowl
33:02 Jake: I mean them going to a to a two seed is amazing because that means you get home home field advantage Justin: They know how to take care of that there, too Jake: Yeah, so I think that's I think they're gonna win and they're gonna win big I think Dallas will fold and probably won't win another game for the rest of the year Then we got Tennessee Titans at Seattle Justin: Seattle not a team frickin terrible, so I'm gonna pick Tennessee and I'm gonna you know hats off to them for starting out 0 and 6 and having the chance to finish the season at 500 so Tennessee hats off to you and Jake: I'll pick them I wonder if a lot of Tennessee Titans fans are thinking, man, if we made that Vince Young switch two games earlier, we'd be in the playoffs. But anyway, yeah, I Justin: completely locked at two at home at home I I don't know if what they're gonna do as far as their playing philosophy I imagine Tomlinson won't play too much as probably Rivers will get the game off but Washington is so bad that I think San Diego will win anyway so I'm gonna pick San Diego Jake: Yeah, I agree. Justin: They might want to keep this little streak going that they have, San Diego. Jake: Yeah, I think they want to win. And I think they'll play into it. So I think they will win. Then we have Baltimore at Oakland. Oakland, again, the team that everybody loves to hate and really sucks, but except for they can be good teams. And Baltimore needing, they're the one below us. They're in the sixth seed right now. they're in they win their end they win their end but of course they are also looking if they win and they they lose it's a bad thing so the i what he thinks happens Justin: i think baltimore's gonna win going to Oakland, Oakland sucks. Their defense will take care of the game and they'll run the ball well and they'll win the game. So I'll take Baltimore. Jake: I'll take Baltimore too, although if I were going to throw in the upset special of the week I'd put it right here. I think Oakland will play hard at home last game.
36:03 Jake: and not that they don't you Justin: So, I think I asked you this question like 4 or 5 weeks ago, and now I know the answer. I would so much rather be Tennessee at 0 and 6 than Denver at 6 and 0. God, when you think about starting off 6 and 0 and being on the outside looking in on the playoffs in the last week of the season, you did something really, really wrong. I'll pick them to win. I still don't think they're gonna make the playoffs. I think they'll win and not get in. And I don't know what that means for a young head coach down there, or over there, in Josh McDaniels. I can't imagine they'd get rid of him, but boy that's a bad, that's a bitter pill to swallow 6-0 and not make the playoffs. That's tough. Jake: I agree and there's a lot of teams. I mean the tape Giants went five and oh no playoffs for you Jets were yeah, you know still three and six and oh Jets were three and oh and looking great and You know our heartbeat away from not making the playoffs Justin: Yeah, but I'll pick Denver at it's very interesting that that we thought that there's no way nine and seven team makes the playoffs That you're gonna have to get to ten and six like three weeks ago, two weeks ago, even we were saying, nine and seven teams are going to make the playoffs. Jake: And I think an eight and eight have a shot. Justin: If we lose, eight needs have a shot. Absolutely. If people lose, if the eight and seven teams lose, eight and eight team certainly has a shot. Jake: And I will say for the AFC, NFC battle, it's always been interesting. We always say, oh, the AFC is so much tougher. But the NFC, look at this top. I mean, look at the NFC North. I mean, you got two teams, like 11 in or whatever it is, 11, 3, and 12 in 3, just running to the math. I mean, basically between the Giants. KELOLAND dot com. the philly the dallas and philly they're all with you know over ten minutes each Justin: that cds yes always one of the better Jake: uh... and then we got green bay and arizona which could be that are locked which could be actually a um... this could be one of the repeater games Justin: so uh... which is which is why i think this game is going to be very vanilla Neither of these teams need the game, they're both kind of locked into where they are and they'll likely play each other. Which makes for interesting, you know, there's a bunch of matchups this week that could totally repeat the next week, which makes for really interesting matchups. I think just the home team Arizona will win this game. I Just because I think Matt Leiner is better than who ever Green Bay's backup is, so.
39:01 Jake: Umm, yeah probably. Ummm, I'm gonna go with Green Bay though. I think they're on a roll and I think they really want to win. So I'm gonna go with Green Bay, just on a hint. Alright, let's get to the AFC match ups now. Remember, remember, I'm gonna go with Green Bay though. Scores, scores. course. I want scores. So let's go with the New England. At Houston, remember New England hasn't won a road game. That's still true? Justin: Still true. That is still true. Jake: And Houston doesn't have a lot to play for. Is it true? I think it still is true. Justin: Is that true though? Jake: No, they've won one. Well, I think they won two, one that wasn't official, one that wasn't official, and one that wasn't official. But so give me some thoughts on the New England. This is an important to the Jets, and I won't talk about it. This is an important to the Jets because New England and Cincinnati Cincinnati are the three and the four seed. If New England wins this game with or without their starters, And that's the end of the We'll be right back. Cincinnati at the 830 game on Sunday Night Football, playing the fabulous New York Jets, will have nothing to play for. Zero. There's nothing other than pride and pain in the cold. Justin: I don't think they have anything to really play for anyway. Yes, they do. Jake: They have the difference between a third seed and a fourth seed. And we'll talk about why that's important. Justin: If you're really looking that far ahead to say, I want to be three versus four. ... Because I know you want to play the Colts, I'd rather play San Diego. And you're looking beyond the team that you're going to have to play in the first round, that you have a bad mentality to begin with. Three and four to me are the same. You're playing a home game against a against a wild card team. And that's that. All three and four means is your plan home. And if you care about being three because you don't want to play one, then I think you have to get your priorities and check. I'll start by saying that. Then I'll make my pick. Houston defeats New England. You say again, defeats New England. Wow. I score. of 28 to 24. Jake: Wow. I don't think that's going to happen. I think New England will come out, they'll throw a lot of balls. I think the Brady Moss thing is going again. I think New England will win this game. They'll come out with enough that they'll get up there and then they'll let Houston try to catch up. I don't think they'll win it. I'll call it 31. one. 17 for the New England Patriots to win the game. Then we have Pittsburgh, another, actually, well actually this is, only three of the AFC games out of the four have any kind of playoff implications, but Pittsburgh's still in the hunt, and Miami's still in the hunt, surprisingly. They need help, they need help by the Jets, and they need help by, I guess, Baltimore, need both of them to lose. But they still have the chance if they win this game so Pittsburgh's the same thing they need both Baltimore and the Jets to lose Justin: Has a better chance I think than Pittsburgh
42:00 Jake: Wow By the numbers yet, but who do you think is gonna win the game and give me a score? Justin: Who do I think is gonna win the game? I think Pittsburgh's gonna win this game and the reason is really just experience They've played in these games before end of the season, I mean shit, they won the Superwall last year, so... They're just more accustomed to laying in this type of game, and Miami just really showed that they're not ready by shitting the bed completely against a team that they really shouldn't have shit the bed that badly against. uh particularly to start the game off, they really dug themselves a hole. So I'm going to say Pittsburgh wins this game on the road in a fairly decent scoring, 24-21. Very close game, but Pittsburgh pulls it out. Jake: You must be looking at my paper. Yeah, I called it 24-21 for Pittsburgh. Justin: I can't see your paper across the digital aisle. Oh, there it is. Jake: Yeah, you see my other score as well. But yes, I do think that I think Pittsburgh, I agree. They have a lot of, they've also been winning with some interesting wins at the end there. Pittsburgh has. Justin: They tried to lose the game last week against Baltimore. Jake: And that makes me think that Miami has, at home Miami has a shot. Chad Henney, I will say, I think he threw it 55 times last game. he's not bad he can't keep is too much is it for my but he's becoming like a good little quarterback and I think they have a shot if not they should be looking at that as an interesting thing for next year but I do agree Pittsburgh this is this is not the type of game that the Pittsburgh Steelers the Super Bowl champion to be serious will or should lose so I think this for wins 24 10 Then we have... the second team of the indianapolis colts against uh... basically second team of the of will bills does away those are starters well there's they're the ones left after the injuries but uh... in a game that no one cares about Justin: uh... i'm going to give you a list of win this game though Wow, the Bills are gonna win. Yeah, I mean In the I saw what they have as a backup and And not just quarterback. I mean they really pulled their whole team out Against us and man, do they suck Pretty evident to me that Peyton Manning's the MVP of the decade Uh, relenting. Uh, cause that team stinks without him. Uh, I'm gonna pick Baltimore, or Baltimore Buffalo, I apologize. Uh, because I just don't think Indy has anything in him. So I'm gonna pick Buffalo to win. Uh, and I think the score's gonna be low. It's gonna be like 16-10. That 10's gonna come with Manning and the game. Jake: I think Manny's gonna do more than that in his time in there. I think he'll put up at least I don't know if he'll play more than a quarter. I think he'll play half. It's gonna be in Buffalo
45:03 Jake: Remember, it's in Buffalo. If it's cold and windy and if it's slick, maybe they're not gonna want him out there I still think Indy goes in there and plays and that little quarterback He does some painting and I don't think the Buffalo Bills have enough to put up a fight. So I think that's 20 to 6 Cincy I mean India Staring down my Cincy score and now though the game of the week the Sunday night football game the last game of 2009 regular season, the last regular season and probably, because there's still a mathematical chance football game ever to be played in the giant stadium, otherwise called the metallands, which will be the Cincinnati Bengals at this point knowing their own fate or knowing the fate that they have against the New York Jets who need a huge win to get in and this is a team this is the interesting scenario on this okay so bye 8 o'clock by 4 o'clock, we'll know New England Houston. In your scenario, Houston wins. Therefore, sincey, if they win, goes to the third seed. If then sincey wins, sincey ends up playing a different, ends up letting in, if again, Pittsburgh wins, letting in Pittsburgh. into the hunt and then they play Pittsburgh. So here's the question. If you're Marvin Lewis, the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals, why in the fuck would you want to let in your division rival? Justin: Well, it's not letting in Pittsburgh. Well, Pittsburgh would have to win. But here's the more. Oh, yeah, but they'll know. But here's the thing. Here's the thing. Jake: You predicted the Pittsburgh to win. So I'm saying just based on what you said in predictions, they will know that by that time, if they win, Pittsburgh will have won, Houston will have won by your prediction. Then Cincy will know if they win this game, that they will let in Pittsburgh and then play Pittsburgh. Justin: But that's not even, all right, that's not even the thing, though. I think the thing here is, if you're Marvin Lewis, There's a big big chance that you're gonna play the Jets the next week Jake: Well, that's a no that's that's that well not if you win the game you win the game You don't have to play them at all sure, but you know, you're in the playoffs, right? Listen this point, but I know but you need to get the facts at this point in this game You know a hundred percent if you Who's this game you play the Jets if you win this game you play the Pittsburgh Steelers? Justin: Well now you know that going into it. Yes. Yeah, but you don't know that you
48:03 Jake: You will know by 8 o'clock at night. But that's the point. You will know by 8 o'clock at night exactly what will happen if you win or lose. There's no question. You're doing it because you're questioning because we don't know who will win or lose. I'm saying at 8 o'clock at night on Sunday night, you're Marvin Lewis. You look at the scoreboard. You will know if Pittsburgh won and Houston lost, or Houston won, you know if you win this game. game. Okay. You know what I'm saying? So they- Justin: I don't think that that plays into his decision making. Jake: Oh my god it does. You're never going to be a head coach. Justin: I think what plays more into his decision making is that it's going to be cold, it's going to be windy, it's going to be nighttime, and I don't want to get anyone hurt. And there's the potential I can play this team, this very team again next week, so I want to show them absolutely nothing. I want to show them what I would show them in a preseason game because in case I play them next week I don't want them to see boo. I don't want them to Jake: Know that any of our place stop saying stop saying in case they will play us the next week if they sit their starters Basically, yes, they know that if they lose that game that we're in and we will play them one week later Justin: I think that that's actually a good move for them To be honest. Jake: And I absolutely agree with you. That's what I'm trying to say. I'm trying to say if you're a Cincinnati and you're looking at this game, you know the Pittsburghs won, you know the Houstons distinguishing. You know that if you win this game, Pittsburgh gets into the playoffs. And I'm thinking that that scenario might be the most-. Justin: You're like literally throwing. Throwing it out there. Do you think Marvin Lewis would actually try to win the game to let in Pittsburgh or It's not when the game to keep Pittsburgh out. Like, is he back conniving? I do not think he is. Jake: I don't think so. Otherwise, you are one of the dumbest people on the planet. Take it this way. The Jets, locked in the third seed or the fourth seed, have the chance to play someone on the chargers who don't matter. But if the chargers win. If the Chargers win, we play the Chargers the next week at home. They have to come back and fly across and meet us. If we beat the Chargers, we let in the Patriots, who we then have to play the next week. Do you not think that Rex Ryan and everybody on the planet would say, you know what we're going to? We're going to take every one of our starters. and we're going to take our second string people and we're have them go in the locker room because we don't want to play the Patriots a known rival who can you know who has a chance who knows us well who studies us every season. But this New York Jets team who's going to win 23-6. Okay, so I I agree. I'm just saying as a head coach. There's no way you'd look at that and we'll see I think Carson We'll play I think I'm gonna have I think oh, I don't think I have I think you'll play a quarter
51:04 Jake: Okay quarter if we and if we and and a quarter and then for every time that he gets touched or pushed down Justin: They take away one. Well, that's one round. That's the thing. I think unlike Unlike Indy Peyton is just He just does not get sacked. It's like he wills it to not happen. We can get to Palmer and we will. And as soon as that does happen, as soon as it's like David Harris comes in and smacks him in the head, there'll be changes. And if Ocho Sinko thinks he's going to a get off Revus Island, I don't think so. Jake: You're on the island. So what's okay, so what's your final score? 36 I Agree, I think it's 28 10. I think the score touchdown somewhere either in the end where it doesn't matter Jt. O'Sullivan man. He's gonna rock it awesome So if that happens we will be in the playoffs and we'll be heading to Cincinnati the next week In other news, in interesting other news, Pro Bowl came out this year. Wow, this is a long episode, isn't it? It is. Justin: We are really testing, testing your endurance audience. Well, you're waiting for us to answer the tweets, so you better stick in there. Jake: Better hang in there. So, Jets, three Jets players made the Pro Bowl this year. Nick, let's take congratulations to... Nick Mangold, Alan Fenneke, and the Revas Island. Duro, that was a no-reoffs. Justin: Yeah, absolutely. I was actually thinking about this afternoon and thinking realistically, unlike in the past where I've gone crazy and said, well, every jet should be in a plane in a pro. Well, I actually thought realistically and I thought that there should be four jets in them Jake: Interesting, the person who's going instead of him is D'Amico Ryan. Justin: D'Amico Ryan is a hell of a player, but he's not on the best defense in the league. And Ray Lewis goes because he's Ray Lewis. And that's fine. He deserves that. Jake: But this is where the pro ball is. There's a name thing, right? Fenneka too, it's like, okay, but can anybody name four plays that Fenneka did that? Justin: Well, Fenneka's on the offensive line of the number one rushing team in the league. It's easy to defend, so is the starting center and starting left guard are on the starting line of the best... Rushing team in the entire NFL and that's why they belong in the Pro Bowl Alan Fannock also has a history being
54:00 Jake: Well, that's the thing I think I think that going for him you get name recognition is a huge thing and I vote every year I don't know if you actually vote but I go on every year and I look down the list and Even when I'm looking down the list at Once you know I've picked the Jets once I pick the jet player. I'm looking down the list and I'm looking for name recognition I'm like, oh who's this guy? I don't know though he is but I know this guy, you know I know Jared Allen, you know, I know I know DeMarcus where but I don't know who this Lance Briggs kid guy is or whatever. I know But you know I'm saying like I think name recognition is huge, but so so okay. We made three plays. I think that's great It's it's it's you know it's nice to see those guys go. I think we had more last year We have way more last year which is like six or seven. Justin: It actually says something about You know how I mean you look at our defense again number one in the league one player. That's great I think that's phenomenal that it's such a team defense that it, you know, you can single out Rivas as being a key to it, but it's such a team defense and team oriented that you can't actually say, you know, oh this guy or that guy. Again, if Jenkins plays the whole season, he probably makes the pro bowl. But that's another story. Jake: Oh yeah, and I will say there's a part of it too that's, you know, the, the far effect. Oh yeah. The far effect last year brought Pro Bowl attention to the team. Remember, we were doing really well at that time. And you can see even this year, look at the Minnesota, it's eight players from Minnesota. Justin: He made it again this year. Jake: Are all those players the most deserving over others? Five off of Baltimore? I mean, really? Justin: Sydney Rice as a wide receiver Is he really the fourth best wide receiver in the NFC? Jake: Or Ed Reed? Ed Reed has done very little this year. He gets there because his name is Ed Reed. And if my name was Ed Reed, they'd put me in. Just have Jim Leonard. But anybody who stands. Justin: Jim Leonard should be there. Jake: Anybody who stands out, uh, he didn't, uh... You know, see? I don't see that that should be on there. Or someone who got in, nice to see Jonathan Vilma get in. Justin: Yeah, there's a couple guys who it's actually nice to see. You know, it's nice to see as crazy as it sounds Wes Welker make the Pearl Wall. He deserves it. A guy like that doesn't often get the... It took a couple years, I think we've said this, it takes a couple years for the league to know that you're there. In time, Harris will make the Pro Bowl, because if he continues to play at the level that he's playing at. I think they did a really good job this year. They picked some guys that really... Deserved to be on the team that might not have been there, you know, like Deshaun Jackson, for example that he clearly
57:00 Justin: Deserves to be on this team That's a good selection there. I think that they did a good job in looking at it Jake: Yeah, and it doesn't seem interesting Just in the other AFC's that Jake long the tackle from Miami got a nod and Justin: not debrick. Jake: No, not D-Brick. Justin: Those are some good tackles though. And you look at, I mean there's some really good tackles. Jake: And Jerry's bird, free safety from Buffalo. And Jerry's bird. And then Jerry's bird. Justin: The two best corners in the league are in the AFC. They're right there, Reavis and Osmaw. Jake: So because I want to make this the longest episode ever in ever Let's do let's actually do one thing before we do tweets, which is Actually, we'll do I'm gonna ask you the question we'll do the tweets and then I want the answer afterward Which is since this is the last game of the metal and yeah Actually, no, I'm even do it better than that do it I want for next show. Oh man So you have to remember teaser teaser for next show. I want we're both gonna come up with our best Games attending games at the metal edge by the way, we're both but that's crazy. I already know what yours are Justin: Well, I does it well, but the rest of the world doesn't know I know two years. How many you got to come up with We're going to come up with top three games at the middle end. I know two years and hoping this Sunday's is the third. Jake: Okay, you can give yours since you don't go as many games. Alright, so let's do some tweets. We have actually one last from last week. Last year, holy shit. That's okay. We actually got some interesting people feedback. We made a big thing about the people who were saying about UK because they are from UK. One question came I from Omri with Taru, sorry if I'm destroying your name, says, Dear Jet Kingdom or sorry at Jet Kingdom, Do you think that Thomas Jones should will play a jet next year. So I think it's a good question. So, uh, what do you think? Do you want me to go first? Because I have a shit-ton of opinions on this. Justin: Oh, I have a shit-ton of opinions on this, too. Um... Well then, make it quick. I'll make it really quick. If he's willing to play at a reasonable price for another one year, I would say yes. But if he's gonna be able to go out on the market and get himself a 2-3-year deal... Jake: I And I think that's a lot about you know the front the front line and I like Thomas Jones. I think he plays
1:00:04 Jake: He has been consistently Okay, moments of greatness He's very consistent in terms of not throwing the ball over, but he's 31 years old I don't care if he sat for three years. He didn't play the full thing It doesn't matter. He starts to down Justin: and unless you smoke a lot of marijuana like ricky williams Jake: it did every guy who uses the only guy i just go get it i'm sorry you do not sign long-term yeah i agree for a year but that's not gonna happen cuz he won't take it you don't sign old running backs to long-term deals you just don't do it it's stupid ten-dong won't do it If it's a one year deal and paid some money, fine. But I think Sean Green has shown if nothing that he is getting to the point where he's ready to take over, you get back a speed guy like Leon Washington. I think we're good. Probably another one and we pick a late round guy. Or pick up someone else from out in the efforts. Justin: or whatever that guy's name is. Jake: Yeah, maybe Larry Johnson. I'm just saying. No, I think there's going to be some, I just don't think he signed. Let him go off. I appreciate what he did, but no. And do you have another question? Justin: Yeah. E-man sent us in a question on the generator. Nice. At just Jack Kingdom, Willem Bengals. Yeah, I think I have. actually. Pimpton asked for questions this week too, so I got one good Will the Bengals sit their players and throw the game so they can face the Jets in the first round? In in parens avoid Steelers Ravens I don't think we need to answer that question Yeah, we actually already answered that you got both of our opinions on that matter So we just worked that into the show for you there you man Yes, we did. We both think they will. Jake: Yeah, I think they will do everything to make it look like they're... The only thing that's going to stop them from absolutely throwing the game like literally... They have to show up. No, it's that it's on the national stage. And it's on Sunday night. Justin: They can't make a mockery of it. Jake: They can't make a mockery. I think they're hoping the Jets get a big enough lead that they can feel like, okay, It looks like we're losing anyway. They're probably the worst case scenario is if they actually go ahead by like let's say 14 or 21 zero By the half and they really want to sit there and they actually try and throw it And they're like whoops jt jt solven please throw it to mr Throw it to the Revas Island. Justin: Yeah, just keeps trying to throw it to the guy that Revas is covering and see what happens. Jake: I honestly think we're going to play the exact same game we play every week, which is it's not even fun to try to predict how we're going to play the game because it's going to be extremely conservative. We're going to play defense. Good defense. We're going to run the ball and we're going to try to make Sanchez throw less than 10 times. the new If he shows if he throws it 15 times we're in trouble. Justin: Hey, recipe for victory 45 runs 200 yards and play some good defense.
1:03:03 Jake: And here's the good thing and I you know playoffs if we get into the playoffs the good thing about that is if it is a good defense and you just have to run the ball and you have a quarterback who can just not throw the you know not make big mistakes although he can and does make big mistakes. That's a good thing to have in the playoffs. Justin: So for success when you I'm not saying we're going anywhere. Jake: I'm not even saying we're getting the playoffs. But if we get in a big if interesting to have good defense, number one defense, number one running game. Quarterback. Anyway, we'll talk about that next week. Until next week because we're gonna wrap up the show now. We are love you. We're gonna wrap up the show Wow I know it's only out almost an hour and ten minutes.
